A depressed Phillip Adams was struggling to come to terms with having his NFL career cut short by injuries, and was exhausting himself with strenuous workouts before he shot dead five people, including two children, his agent has revealed.
Adams, 32, carried out a mass shooting in the small community of Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Wednesday, killing a beloved local doctor, Robert Lesslie, his wife and two grandchildren, along with an air conditioning technician, before turning the gun on himself early Thursday.
The shooting also left a sixth victim severely wounded and clinging to life.
Officials in South Carolina on Thursday released a pair of harrowing 911 calls reporting the shooting, including one on which a neighbor said he had heard 20 gunshots coming from Lesslie's property.
'I saw the guy running around, and I heard the popping, but I didn't realize it was shooting until I saw this guy laying on the ground,' a neighbor cutting his grass told 911.
'He's screaming, "I've been shot,"' another 911 caller, who had spoken to the lone surviving AC repairman, said.
Investigators had not determined why Adams committed the violent acts, with the local sheriff saying: 'There's nothing right now that makes sense to any of us.'
